waking up in vegas

At this point, Yuri was pretty sure he'd raised his eyebrows so high that they'd become part of his hair. He'd be willing to bet that even Estelle had never read any stories that involved getting kidnapped to...be part of a family.
He could say that it was the weirdest part. Weirder than waking up in a strange city with all its too-neat rows of houses, neat enough to be a nobles' quarter but far too samey. Nobles liked to stand out as gaudy centres of attention, not all blend in to each other.
The papers were crumpled in his hand as he turned his back on the house to look around instead. What he ended up finding were some answers, but none that really pleased him: people in the same situation, some happy, some resigned; the big guy's house, which he couldn't even break into; and boundaries that couldn't be passed.
He sure felt like someone's toy right now.
The searching had tired him out a little--more mentally than physically--so he made his not-so-triumphant return to..."his" house. Well, fine, he'd play along for the moment and check the place out.
He used his new set of keys to unlock the door, waltzing in without removing his boots, and started poking around. He doubted he'd find anything useful in here, though.

It wasn't the first time during her stay in the City that Rita had woken up someplace that wasn't their house. She couldn't be sure where she was at all; as she looked around, she could only see a few feet in the thick fog, and the ground at her feet was nearly barren. It was pretty gloomy...but that alone was no reason for her to be scared. Knowing the City, something else could be here.
First things first, though: she found her device in the shirt pocket of her pajamas, which she was still wearing, and tried to see if she could contact anyone.
"Hey! Can anyone hear me? Tyr?"

Going to sleep wasn't usually hard for Tyr; after the day's adventures and then further adventures in the bath (which was supposed to be relaxing, but he since learned "relaxing" was just another way to say "boring", and what's boring about baths?), he was usually pretty sleepy--and if he wasn't, Cleo read him something before Gremio tucked him in since he had to go to bed whether he wanted to or not.
Luckily this wasn't one of those nights where he just couldn't sleep. Even though it was rainy, he drifted off to sleep without a peep...until a loud crash woke him up just in time to see his room fill with light. He was too scared to scream as he pulled the blankets up over his head. The little rain from earlier turned into a full storm. His blankets did nothing to muffle the rumbling of thunder overhead or the constant patter of rain. It drowned out all the other house sounds that he usually heard. It was like he was right inside the storm clouds.
It wasn't that he was really scared or anything - he wasn't a baby - but...he couldn't sleep when he didn't know what was going on, and Gremio told him he'd do anything for him. So it was fine if he just went to see Gremio so he's keep him company. Yeah.
Tyr hopped out of bed quietly - the result of months of careful training in that skill - and hugged his pillow to his chest as he crept out of his room and to the stairs...and ran down them as fast as he could at the next clap of thunder like there was something right at his heels that would have snatched him if he didn't. He wasn't scared; he was definitely not scared. It wasn't like the rain could do anything...but maybe there were bandits that snuck into the house while everyone else was asleep? Or City-State spies? Or...anyone that wasn't supposed to be there? He was supposed to go to Gremio if that ever happened--he had the biggest axe Tyr ever saw, so he was definitely strong even if he never really looked like he was.
Right, so he could just peek into his room first. "Gremio?" he called meekly. Maybe he wouldn't hear him... He ran from the door and leaned over Gremio's bed, close to his face. "Gremio. Hey, Gremio."

It wasn't exactly easy sneaking through the grounds that used to just be the beach. It was all sand - and not quicksand - thankfully, but something had changed in the few hours they were out.
For one, a storm had begun brewing.
For another, creatures - too bent and hairy to be human but walking and holding themselves like they were - had begun prowling the area between their home and the forest. If Tyr wasn't so uncertain that the things might have been cursed citizens themselves, he wouldn't have a problem with the two of them carving a path out to the front door.
As it was, though, the front door firmly "guarded" by them, leaving only the side entrance to their now-transformed home. Even if it kept its wooden siding and large windows, the inside looked black and the glass only reflected the rumbling storm clouds overhead. Tyr didn't waste time sneaking over to the door to the "tower", gripping Rita's hand in his.
"This looks like the only way inside now..."

[ The winds had picked up since this morning; Tyr should have really listened to Gremio when he insisted that he wait another day before setting out again, but he was sure that he could at least make it across the Dunan border before nightfall...
And if the snow wasn't high enough to creep into his boots, he probably could. Part of him wished Gremio was with him, but a larger part was glad that the ageing man hadn't followed him into the storm this time. The wind was whipping his face raw and snow was creeping into his coat (and probably his supply bag) with every gust. His cloak was only good for keeping it off his neck.
He was still foolish, though. He knew and could admit to that much. By the time he finally spotted a - actually rather nice - lit house from his path, the snow had piled itself onto his shoulders clung to his boots even when he started up the walkway to it. It wasn't the first time he had asked to stay at a stranger's place, but it would be the first time he had to do it in his own homeland. It was somewhat embarrassing...
There wasn't much of a choice right now, though. With a sigh, he knocked at the door with his free hand. ]

[ All things considered, Tyr was getting used to this new world. Uncertainty has drifted into the territory of nihilism without him even realising it, and now he didn't have a problem with letting himself just sit up in the trees and watch the time pass in small town he had settled in.
In a way, it was almost what he wanted when he left Gregminster years ago, but right now, he doesn't know why that was. ]

This post is dedicated to an AU loosely based on this curse's setting. In short, Flynn is a police detective, Tyr is a Vegas magician (er, gambler. He makes money disappear?), and Yuri frigging Lowell is a mafioso jerk.
