Is it a sin to be weak-hearted?

"Not here either..."
Alexei picked himself up from the ground, brushing off his knees and turning to his former classmate again. It didn't seem like things could get much worse after the meteors hit. Areas that weren't destroyed by the impact were left uninhabitable and needed to be evacuated. Entire metropolitan cities were emptied and thrown into chaos as people tried to reach the parts of the country that had escaped the devastation.
But it wasn't that easy. There were still more refugees than there were places able to take them in. Of course there were camps and settlements hobbled together to provide some sort of protection and stability. That had been fine for the two of them and the rest of their school group. Wait, and maybe their families would find them. Maybe they had escaped, too, and were just separated in the chaos of the aftermath.
Alexei, for one, still really hoped that was the case.
It was a question why he didn't just stay there instead of following Marcel after he was exiled.
...well, it wasn't like he could just let him go alone. The two of them weren't exactly friends before, but the two of them were the same. The same mutation, or illness, or curse—whatever it was, exactly. If this were a movie, people like them, with powers, would become super heroes and save everyone.
But this wasn't like a movie. Unnatural powers like theirs were seen as more dangerous than amazing, and...he resented the way people like them were shunned. He hated the fact that even someone like Marcel could be exiled for something he couldn't help.
Even if he couldn't bring himself to tell him that they were both "cursed", he felt a kind of kinship with his barely-a-friend classmate. They should stay together.
At the same time, their current state was pitiful. The city around them was abandoned and in ruins, most useful items pillaged long before they arrived, and tracks in the park didn't feel old or manmade. The energy he felt on them wasn't quite like anything a normal animal would give off. Not that he was exactly an expert in that area, but humans weren't the only ones that were changing.
"There might be something else living here now. I don't know if it will be safe to stay here."

Date: 2015-09-25 11:56 pm (UTC)He didn't feel as though he was being of any help just standing around like that. Not to say he had simply been staying in once place but Marcel didn't really deem himself as having accomplished anything. It felt as though he had less of an idea of what to do compared to his companion. As of currently, he was definitely relying on Alexei quite a bit. The other's sense of determination was enough to give anyone hope, Marcel thought. But there was no reason to simply give up on things, right?
The world they resided in was one that was only afraid. Perhaps that didn't make things right but there was something to be understood. It wasn't easy, surely, to comprehend that such people were existing. People wanted to be safe. Marcel didn't have the mind to be bitter. That wasn't to say that there wasn't a time he missed before all of what happened, of course. But why did he need to live now if he was all dangerous? Was there something he needed to do? Was there something he could do?
What mattered?
"But I don't imagine that it becoming night time would necessarily stop whatever is here." He was soon saying, slowly.
There was only hope that whatever was in the park would just want to stay in its own territory. He didn't want the other to get hurt on his account of being ridiculous.

Date: 2015-09-26 12:25 am (UTC)The words came to mind unbidden, making Alexei pause for a moment, staring blankly at Marcel all the while. No, Marcel was right. They should say something. Besides, they may still listen to him; they don't know that he and Marcel both have powers.
He couldn't remember ever being so bitter or pessimistic. Warning the others to watch out would only be right.
After a few moments, Alexei shook his head, his expression returning to normal.
"No, if it's a predator, it may become even more active at night. If we turn back, we'll need to be careful."
Yes. Because even though he knew what his own powers could do, he was honestly a little wary of using them. He wasn't even sure what the extent of Marcel's was and if he even had control.
"Do you want to return to the camp?"
It would be a long walk back, but it would be worth it, he reminded himself.

Date: 2015-10-14 08:56 pm (UTC)Maybe his first question was unclear, so he tried to be a bit more specific. Of course saying "we should return to camp" could have easily meant "we should rest".
As much as he tried to remind himself that going would be the right thing to do, he still hadn't made a move to start retracing their steps back there. It still bothered him, deep down. They may be wasting their time walking back there to warn them when they may be rejected before they can even get two words in.
"Even if we try to tell them, they may not want to hear what we have to say."

Date: 2015-11-03 01:06 am (UTC)What was he supposed to say? 'You don't know until you try?' That didn't sound like a statement that could even be taken seriously especially by his companion. But there was some truth to that idea, he thought. After all, there was a chance of them paying some attention if they knew their lives were being threatened even if they didn't necessarily believe the two of them. And yet there was still the other side to that- the pill that was most difficult to swallow.
"...You're right."

Date: 2015-11-03 02:10 am (UTC)...Marcel seemed so sad, though. That tugged at a part of him, too. Marcel...
He smiled slightly, inclining his head.
"Let's go try together."

Date: 2015-12-29 12:36 pm (UTC)He spoke lightly and easily as if he didn't just completely contradict himself. Seeing that dejected look leave Marcel's face was worth it. And part of him felt slightly better about it, too, though there was still a bitter part of him that thought that trying really was pointless.

But that would mean taking them back to where they were banished. Well, as long as their legs were still working they wouldn't be without any plans at all. So he would began to walk as quickly as he could without breaking into an actual run.

Date: 2015-12-29 01:09 pm (UTC)It was going to sting when the inevitable happened, but he wasn't going to stop him. He kept an eye out for any creatures before they became targets in the process, but so far, everything looked fine. It was hard to be certain with the number of dilapidated buildings and fallen structures, and Alexei couldn't say he was exactly an expert in wildlife, but no immediate danger was still something.
It would be dark by the time they made any real progress, though.
